The Energy of the Sun
Course Number(s): Physics 1002.01
Semester: Spring 2012
Specific dates: Meets January 17 - February 16
Hours: 1
How was the Sun born and how will it die? Will it explode (go supernova)? Hollywood movie producers seem to think so. Students in the course, on the other hand, will learn about the Sun’s source of energy and how it affects life on Earth. During the course students will learn about nuclear fusion (the famous E = mc2), the formation of the sun, the observable features of the sun and what they tell us about the energy production in the sun’s core, as well as will discuss a possible connection between solar activity and climate change on Earth. The class will review and critique the science fiction movie Supernova.
