Featured Profile: Beverly Horvit
Newsroom veteran Dr. Beverly Horvit takes a global perspective.
Horvit teaches courses in international journalism and news writing. She has significant newsroom experience and worked as a reporter for several newspapers including the Houston Post. She has also served as a faculty news editor at the Missouri School of Journalism-affiliated community newspaper, the Columbia Missourian.
An award-winning researcher, Horvit studies how news organizations produce and frame international events related to foreign policy. She has examined logistics as well as gatekeeping – how decisions are made as to what becomes “news” – to help determine how international news is shaped and reported. Her work has been published in the Newspaper Research Journal, International Communication Gazette and the International Journal of Press/Politics.
Additionally, Horvit serves as the executive director of Kappa Tau Alpha, the national honor society for the field of journalism. The organization recognizes academic excellence and promotes scholarship in journalism and mass communication. “It’s an honor to be entrusted with this responsibility and to be involved with a society that recognizes outstanding students,” says Horvit.
Dr. Beverly Horvit is an assistant professor of journalism studies in the Missouri School of Journalism.
