Featured Profile: Mike McKean
Meet Mike McKean: media maestro.
McKean is a frequent trainer and guest lecturer at top media companies and universities globally. He has won multiple awards for excellence in teaching and innovation. McKean has helped the University of Missouri develop partnerships with Apple, Inc., Adobe Systems, Sprint, Microsoft and other technology-driven firms. He comments weekly on KBIA’s “Views of the News” to educate the public about media trends and ethical challenges.
While many schools around the world were struggling to teach multi-media storytelling, McKean developed MU’s innovative convergence journalism program, which uses multiple mediums to create compelling stories. He has worked internationally to help establish new convergence journalism programs in China, Russia and New Zealand. McKean also established the Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI) Student Competition which brings together students from computer science, journalism and business to explore new opportunities in digital media.
As Media of the Future facilitator for The Mizzou Advantage initiative, McKean connects scholars with expertise in digital news distribution, communication policy, media economics, documentary film production and other media-related topics.
Mike McKean earned a bachelor’s degree from the Missouri School of Journalism and a master of arts in political science from Rice University. He is Director of the Futures Lab, RJI’s experimental newsroom and technology testing center at the MU School of Journalism.
