Laura Johnston

Laura Johnston provides guidance and options for the next generation of journalists.

Before coming to the University of Missouri, Johnston worked as a reporter and copy editor. Now at MU, Johnston is senior news and opinion editor for the Columbia Missourian. This community newspaper is one of the Missouri School of Journalism’s professional training programs. Under the guidance of Johnston and other faculty, students report, edit and design for the paper.

In recent years, Johnston and other leaders at the Missourian have begun experimenting with multimedia platforms including iBooks, Kindle, rich-media pdfs and interactive Web pages. “What I like about all these projects is we aren’t tied to one way of doing things,” says Johnston.

Johnston is a mentor of the Missouri Urban Journalism Workshop, bringing high school students from around the country to the MU campus to produce stories, photos and broadcasts for digital publication. Additionally, she is one of several key journalism faculty

who make up the Missouri School of Journalism’s Strategic Planning Leadership Team.

Laura Johnston is an associate professor of print and digital news at the Missouri School of Journalism.
